Shoegazing: “Report — Gerberei Martin”
In Germany, after World War I when, as mentioned above, some tanneries started using synthetic and chemical ingredients in the tanning, a German sole leather association was formed to preserve the quality and traditional ways of doing things. At the peak sometime before WWII, there were 185 tanneries in Germany that were part of the association, and then there were about the same number of sole leather tanneries in the country which weren’t part. The association had strict rules on how the processes should be made, and all member tanneries had to follow this. Apart from having to stay in the final long-term pits for at least 24 months, one was for example not allowed to use any synthetics or chemicals, no extracts only real bark, and one was not allowed to bleach the leather. However, since around the 1950’s, basically no tannery has followed these rules fully, and the association sort of dissolved.
