This term is applied to split leather made from horsehide, as well as that made from what would be strictly considered a colt. Colts are used for food in certain parts of Russia, just as veal calves are used in this country, and the hides are a staple article in Russian commerce. The leather is of form, solid texture, and has been much used in recent years for patent leather.
