- 6-ply in most cases
- about 3m for 270 degree welt
- rolls in hands, palms together
- uses scratch awl twisted in thread to remove fluff
- waxes, leaving 12 inches unwaxed at each end
- burnish wax with leather
- cut the thread at the hook
- thins out the ends to tapers by unwinding plies, then untwisting plies, all at the same length
- waxes and rolls the taws together
- sews with metal bristles
- locks by piercing the thread twice and twisting the taws around the loop-like eye of the bristle
