Hobnails were once common military boots as well as mountain climbing boots and other outdoor boots. Hobnails could reduce the frequency of resoling by acting as sacrificial points for abrasion against the ground. However, hobnails also impose more wear on those surfaces, and can easily scratch many kinds of indoor flooring.
