- traces just the shank and forepart of the shoe on paper, with the heel hanging off the side of the bench
- lays the oversized paper into the shoe, pressing the edges against the featherline within the shoe
- removes and marks the crease on the paper
- trims to the new line
- uses the pattern to cut out of cardboard
- bevels the back edge of the cardboard
