last series developed for logging boots in the early 1930s
used by a number of Pacific Northwest shoe companies, including White’s Boots, Nicks Boots, and Frank’s Boots, and in modified form by Drew’s Boots
For many years, Jones and Vining provided 55 lasts to many US shoe companies. More recently, Horma, S.A. de C.V. has produced them in Mexico. As of 2024, Sorrell Notions and Findings imports and distributes Mexican-made SNF55 clones in the United States.
55 lasts are often manufactured with alpha hinges and full-length last plates allowing for fully nailed construction.
The original 55 series utilizes arithmetic grading. Ball girths, instep girths, and heel girths increase by 1/4 inch for each width and 1/8 inch for each length size.
The wide variety of resulting lengths and widths allows extended sizing.
