pulling welt too tight around toe makes it stand up, rather than lay flat
hold the welt flat as you curve it around
awl will poke through further down the welt
about 1½ mm difference
[pulls tight by wrapping the awl haft in the right hand and around a glove on the left hand, pulls both perpendicular to the hole]
uses pre-made welt
- grooved
- slashed
- hates making welt herself

  - as curved, slits will continue to tear open

  - uses a lip knife, with the lip in the groove
