YouTube video by Lisa Sorrell demonstrating crimping of cowboy boots
Notes
- soaked vamps in water about half an hour
- let drip dry
- layered in paper
- baby powder on both sides
- crimps vamps and liners together
- helps slide against each other
- make sure talc, not cornstarch
-
crimp break for half an hour
- don’t need one, but makes life easier
- can go direct to crimp board
- crimps at a bench
- bench has third hand bar on a post to hold the crimp board in place
- HDPE crimp board looks like one of Dick Anderson’s
- vamp corner right under screw path
- crimp screw
- pull snug, not taking all slack out
- uses #5 lasting tacks
- leather wrong side out, liner right side to board
- crimping pliers
- specific order
- drives tacks all the way in
- tightens screw after three nails in lasting allowance by toe
- three more nails from ball back through waist
- hold with pliers, set a nail on each side of it
- smooth out wrinkles over cone by hammering with lasting pliers
- work wrinkles out in the direction of the wrinkle, not across them
- final screw tightening, “pretty snug”
- same track sequence even without crimp break
- 7:40 diagram of tack order
