Backstays are leather strips or panels sewn to the outsides of uppers, covering the backseams. Backstays may cover only the backseam or also other upper features, such as external heel stiffeners.
Backstays protect backseams. They can also serve to support the shafts of boots above heel counters. [See United Shoe Machine Corporation’s Shoemaking Manual, page 7.]
