process of cutting v- or u-shaped portions out of the edge of material
For Coding
In mass production, shoe components are often notched according to a notch code as a way of clearly and permanently labeling their size, width, or model number. The position of notches may also be used to mark the medial or lateral side of a pieces. Coding notches may be shaped into clicking dies or cut afterward.
For Orientation
Notching may also be used to make orientation marks.
For Relief
The edges of shoe parts may be notched to facilitate bending around curves without bunching or pleating.
For example, toe puffs and heel counters may be notched to ease lasting and avoid the step of slicing pleats off flush with the crown or heel seat.
