process of pulling the material of an upper over the featherline of a last and fixing it in place to the bottom of an insole or lasting board

often incorporates some aspect of wet forming

Goals

position the upper in the correct rotation relative to the last (see twisted upper)
position the upper at the right height relative to the last
form the outside of the upper over and into the curves of the last
avoid wrinkles in the upper around the featherline
avoid wrinkles in the lining
pull enough material over the featherline for whatever construction will be used
correctly position and fix any stiffeners
correctly position any decorative elements on the vamp, such as toe bugs, wrinkles, medallions, and toe caps
match the positioning of decorative elements from shoe to shoe in a pair
