process of pulling the material of an upper over the featherline of a last and fixing it in place to the bottom of an insole or lasting board
often incorporates some aspect of wet forming
Goals
- position the upper in the correct rotation relative to the last (see twisted upper)
- position the upper at the right height relative to the last
- form the outside of the upper over and into the curves of the last
- avoid wrinkles in the upper around the featherline
- avoid wrinkles in the lining
- pull enough material over the featherline for whatever construction will be used
- correctly position and fix any stiffeners
- correctly position any decorative elements on the vamp, such as toe bugs, wrinkles, medallions, and toe caps
- match the positioning of decorative elements from shoe to shoe in a pair
