Notes

the tip must not be so placed that the seam comes across the joint of the toe; the points of the quarter of Blucher should not come down too far, so as to come into a break of the shoe; circular vamps must be cut as to avoid having seams on the joints of the foot.

This country does not produce enough cattle hides for its own use, the importations of cattle hides reaching a value of $30,000,000 to $40,000,000 a year. Their admission free of duty was the subject of sharp controversy in Congress in 1909, and a reflection of this controversy was to be noted in the action of Congress in 1911, in voting to remove the entire duty from shoes, the avowed purpose of certain representatives being to punish those who had advocated free hides.

Of late years considerable experimentation has gone on in chrome tanning of sole leather. This produces a very dense, solid leather but it has been rather expensive for general use.
