Goodyear Welt Construction

a family of welted constructions where the upper attaches to the bottom via a welt machine-sewn to a rib formed out of or adhered to the insole

Some makers refer to various welted constructions as โ€œGoodyear weltedโ€, even those inseamed with gemming by hand, or even handwelted.

Early commercial versions of the Goodyear welted process used insole carving machines to carve and raise lips around the outsides of leather insoles. Those lips were then turned up and used as the rib for inseaming. The lips might also be reinforced with gemming.

Later on, gemming was pre-formed and adhered to the bottoms of the insoles. Leather was no longer needed for the insoles, since they need not be carved.
