A lap board is a board of wood or other material placed on the lap for holding shoes while working, such as when handwelt inseaming or welting.
A lap board may have:
- cradles for the toe and heel of the shoe
- slots through which to pass a foot strap
- pins or trays for wax
- a small strop or sharpening stone for knives or awls
- a long cutout through which to pass the tops of boots
