YouTube video by Lisa Sorrell on pegging cowboy boots
Notes
Tools
- haft and awl blade
- hammer for hitting the haft
- any hammer will do
- flat face is nice
- hammer for driving pegs
- face not too wide
- face convex, to avoid marring
- outsole will be damp
- pricking wheel to mark spacing
Demo
- doing a heel seat
- drives a bunch of holes at once, then inserts pegs
- rubber bumper on awl blade helps pop the awl back out
- holds awl so heel of hand compresses
- boot between body and holes
- same position, across the boot, while driving the pegs
- has three different Blau Ring boxes on bench
- tend to angle awl slightly down and toward body
- pull the boot tight against the body
- “sometimes you miss”
- close up shot of pegging through shank
- second row staggered from first
- doesn’t use pricking wheel to mark second row
- once finished, saturate all with water
- swell the pegs to hold tightly
- don’t sand smooth until swollen
- takes time to master pegging
