Wood pegs are a traditional form of fasteners, still very popular for dress shoes and western boots.
Traditionally, holes are first pierced into the material with a pegging awl, then pegs are hammered in. Alternatively, holes may also be drilled.
Pegs protruding through the insole into the upper of a shoe may broken off or sanded down with a peg float.
