process of covering a last in masking or similar tape for patterning
Process
-
Cover the last in long, parallel strips of masking tape, overlapping each strip partway over the last. First tape with strips running from heel to toe, then again with strips running roughly from bottom to top. Stretch strips of tape over any vent.
-
Cut through the tape layer down to the last surface around the featherline. Peel away the tape from the bottom of the last. Mount the peel to a sheet of paper and flatten it, creating a bottom paper.
-
Draw the main axis down the top of the cone, the forepart, and the comb to the featherline. Cut through the tape along the main axis down the last surface. Cut around the top edge of the top plane and discard any tape stuck to it.
-
Peel a tape last form for each side from the last, starting at the comb and continuing toward the toe, keeping the each peel in a single, continuous piece.
-
Mount each peel to paper, maintaining the shape of its top edge. Cut slits or darts into the bottom edge as needed to flatten.
